Next week is this year’s National Drive Electric Week. This event is a nationwide celebration of all the benefits of all-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. There are over 200 events, including parades, ride-and-drives, electric tailgate parties, and informational booths across the country. Are you considering making the switch? If you don’t already drive electric, you have plenty of options. There are over 40 different models available for sale, which include cars, trucks, motorcycles, and more. Explore some of the benefits of using an electric vehicle:
Price
You could save big when considering buying an electric vehicle (EV). EV and even hybrid EV models are priced at $37,000 or less. Some models are priced at $30,000 or less, including the Nissan Leaf and Toyota Prius Prime. In addition, many used cars are on the market as these vehicles have gained popularity. These are even more affordable than their new models.
Maintenance
The cost of maintaining an EV is much lower than that of a fuel-powered vehicle. Simply put, an EV has fewer parts to repair and maintain. Additionally, EVs have single-speed transmissions and regenerative braking, reducing wear on the brakes. They don’t require oil changes, and their batteries have a warranty of 8 years or 100,000 miles. Often, the only regular maintenance costs you will buy are windshield wipers and tires!
Incentives
There is a tax incentive of up to $7,500 to buy a new EV. However, once the car manufacturer sells 200,000 EVs, the tax credit is halved for the next two quarters and then split again for the next two quarters before it expires. In addition, plug-in hybrids receive a minor credit, dependent on their battery size.
Environment
Everyone knows that an electric vehicle is much better for the environment, but do you know how much better? No direct emissions make EVs twice as clean as combustion engine vehicles. They average 75 miles per gallon equivalent, while traditional combustion engine cars average 25 miles per gallon. This statistic is accurate even when you account for energy taken from coal plants! These numbers are projected to improve further, following the trend they have held for years.
