Staying Fuel Efficient

January 27, 2022 by jkane

As we close out the first month of the new year, it is an excellent time to check in on your progress with your New Year’s resolution. Did you intend to save more or spend less money? How are you doing with that? According to one study, only about 46% of resolutions are successful by the end of the year. It is crucial to have the discipline to hold on to your money. One of the most significant expenses can be fuel costs as gas prices rise. At Performance Collision Centers, our experts know to make your rides fuel-efficient and help you stick to your resolutions.

Ditch the Exterior Weight

Your longer road trips need tons of gear. Bike racks, roof racks, and storage units all help you organize the journey of your dreams. However, you don’t need all of that extra weight when you make your daily commute. Instead, take off the exterior clutter to increase your ride’s aerodynamics. The best advice is only to add when you use those compartments during that trip.

Remove the Extra Baggage

Much like the exterior gear, interior baggage can also hold you down. Getting rid of this extra weight allows your engine to work less and get you going while using less gas. Improving your gas mileage can quickly be done by decluttering your car.

Monitor Your Tires

Your tires have an enormous impact on your car’s efficiency. Unfortunately, the lower temperatures also bring the pressure out of your tires around this time of the year. As a result, underinflated tires often don’t roll as smoothly, meaning your engine must work harder to keep them moving as usual. Keep track of your tire pressure using a gauge to let you know when you have reached the correct PSI in your tires.

Drive With a Light Foot

While there are cars that have an impressive pick-up speed, it is not the best practice if you are not on a race track. The gas pedal uses more gas the harder you press. Additionally, slowing down quickly also hurts your mileage. Drive slow and steady to save your gas usage. When in doubt, drive defensively and gently to get you where you need to go responsibly.

If you have not been working hard at these practices, that is okay! There is always room for improvement. Try making these a better habit and get yourself going while achieving your New Year’s Resolutions! Here are some additional tips if you want to try other methods.

All vehicles we assess and repaired are sprayed with a disinfecting fogger, both inside the cabin and outside touch spots (such as door handles), upon coming into and leaving our facilities. We wrap the steering wheel and cover the seats for a complete touch-less experience.
